El acercamiento a las lenguas indígenas de la Patagonia Sur según las revistas de la South American Missionary Society

A mediados del siglo XIX, un grupo de anglicanos proveniente de Gran Bretaña intentó llegar al extremo sur de la Patagonia para evangelizar a los indígenas. Este objetivo fue logrado con el establecimiento de una estación misionera en Isla Keppel (1855). Las revistas mensuales publicadas por la South American Missionary Society –Voice of Pity for South America (1854- 1862), A Voice for South America (1863-1866) y South American Missionary Magazine (1867- 1963) dieron cuenta del modo en que los misioneros lograron acercarse e ir adquiriendo las lenguas locales. En este trabajo, focalizamos el proceso de interacción de los misioneros con la comunidad de los yaganes, quienes habitaban las islas en el extremo sur de Patagonia (con algunas menciones de otros grupos aborígenes), según consta en las publicaciones realizadas entre 1854 y 1863, con el objetivo de identificar (a) los procedimientos de acceso a las lenguas indígenas por parte de los misioneros; y (b) las herramientas y estrategias con que emprendieron la tarea de aprender dichas lenguas.
In the middle of the 19th century, a group of Anglicans from Great Britain tried to reach the southern tip of Patagonia to evangelize the indigenous people. This objective was achieved with the establishment of a mission station on Keppel Island (1855). The monthly magazines published by the South American Missionary Society –Voice of Pity for South America (1854–1862), A Voice for South America (1863–1866) and South American Missionary Magazine (1867–1963)– gave an account of how missionaries managed to get closer and to acquire the local languages. In this work, we focus on the interaction process of the missionaries with the Yahgan community, who inhabited the islands in the extreme South of Patagonia (with some mentions of other aboriginal groups), as recorded in the publications made between 1854 and 1863, with the objective of identifying (a) the procedures for access to indigenous languages by missionaries; and (b) the tools and strategies with which they undertook the task of learning those languages.
