El 11 de septiembre del 2001, el mundo se despertó con la noticia de que el país más poderoso militarmente, había sido atacado por un grupo terrorista. Lo significativo era que no se trataba de un ataque exterior por una potencia enemiga, lo ocurrido ha matado no solamente personas sino también ideas: la noción de que la tecnología haría de EUA una fortaleza casi imposible de penetrar. También es cierto, que EUA no está verdaderamente preparado para defenderse de ataques o actuar frente a situaciones de sorpresa, salvo el uso de la fuerza a posteriori. Algunos líderes de relevancia mundial dijeron, frente al atentado, que había comenzado la Tercera Guerra Mundial. La comunidad internacional se manifestó contra el ataque terrorista. Esta situación favoreció decididamente al gobierno norteamericano, para manejarse haciendo uso de su abrumadora superioridad militar, dejando en un segundo nivel, la competencia en el terreno económico.
The 11th of September the world woke with the news that the most military powerful country, had been attacked by a terrorist group. The most significative issue was that it was not a foreign attack by an enemy country, what happened assassinated not only people but also ideas: the idea that the technology would make the United States a fort almost impossible to penetrate. It is also truth that the Unites States is not fully prepared to protect itself from attacks or to take actions during surprising situations. Some leaders said that the attack had begun the Third World War. The international community expressed being against the terrorist attack. This situation helped the American government to use its military superiority, leaving to a second stage, the competition in the economic field.
