El Plan de Fortificación del Estrecho de Magallanes fue delineado a fines del siglo XVI con la intención de incorporar la región a los territorios de la Corona Española. El objetivo de este trabajo es generar información sobre el contingente poblacional embarcado en Sanlúcar de Barrameda y en la escala realizada en Cádiz. Para ello se analizan dos categorías sociales presentes en uno de los documentos administrativos: los pobladores y los oficiales de fortificación, buscando visibilizar y explorar su heterogeneidad en cuanto a género, etnicidad, estado civil, oficios, sueldo, procedencia, relaciones de parentesco, y tamaño y composición de los grupos familiares.
The Strait of Magellan Fortification Project was elaborated at the end of the 16th century to incorporate the region into the territories of the Spanish Crown. The aim of this paper is to gather information on the population group that embarked at Sanlúcar de Barrameda and the stop made in Cadiz. Two social categories (mentioned by one of the administrative documents of the Fortification Project) are analyzed: the settlers and the fortification officers, in an attempt to make them visible and explore their heterogeneity in terms of gender, ethnicity, marital status, professions, salary, origin, kinship, and size and composition of the family groups.
