‘‘Of all sounds in that hour the strangest’’: The Return of the King y la traducción de Minotauro

Al ser traducida al castellano por la editorial Minotauro, la trilogía de J. R. R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings, ingresa al polisistema de la comunidad lingüística hispanohablante. Hasta hoy, ésa es la única traducción oficial y, específicamente en el tercer volumen, The Return of the King, las relaciones intertextuales con obras de William Shakespeare no se ven ‘reproducidas’. Además, en esa traducción tampoco se recrea el dialecto arcaico de los personajes. Por su importancia al caracterizar la poética de Tolkien, dichas relaciones pueden mantenerse ya sea recurriendo a una traducción reconocida de la obra de Shakespeare, o al menos distinguiendo en sus particularidades los dialectos de los personajes en la trilogía. Para comprobarlo se realizará un trabajo contrastivo entre el capítulo “The Battle of the Pelennor Fields” y, en castellano, “La batalla de los Campos del Pelennor”. Una versión castellana que ‘haga eco’ de las peculiaridades de la poética autoral debe contener referencias a las obras de las tradiciones literarias que Tolkien convoca en su trilogía y, asimismo, representar las variaciones dialectales de los distintos grupos que habitan la Tierra Media.
The Spanish translation by Minotauro editorial house of J. R. R. Tolkien’s trilogy The Lord of the Rings has entered the Spanish-speaking community polysystem as the only officially recognised version. In its third volume, The Return of the King, intertextual connections with the works of William Shakespeare have not been ‘reproduced.’ What is more, the archaic dialect used by some of the characters has not been recreated in that version either. Given their importance for a characterisation of Tolkien’s poetics, intertextual relations might be conveyed either by resorting to a recognised translation of Shakespeare’s works, or by having the dialects in the trilogy characters stand out for their peculiarities. In order to prove this, a contrastive analysis of some fragments will be drawn between the chapter “The Battle of the Pelennor Fields” and its Spanish counterpart, “La batalla de los Campos del Pelennor.” A Spanish version ‘echoing’ the particularities of the author’s poetics must include references to the literary traditions invoked by Tolkien in his trilogy and, at the same time, represent the dialectal varieties of the different groups inhabiting Middle Earth.
