El presente trabajo se propone analizar el sentido y la funcionalidad tanto material como espiritual del espacio del desierto en la leyenda de Santa Mar ía Egipciaca –una de las santas medievales más populares, representante del prototipo hagiográfico de las prostitutas arrepentidas– según la narración de la Vida de Santa María Egipciaca, un poema castellano compuesto en el temprano siglo XIII pero transmitido a fines del siglo XIV en el manuscrito K-III-4 de la Biblioteca de San Lorenzo de El Escorial.
This article examines both the material and the spiritual meaning and functionality of the space of the desert in the legend of St. Mary of Egypt, one of the most popular medieval saints, representative of the hagiographical prototype of penitents – according to the narration of Vida de Santa María Egipciaca, a Castilian poem composed in the early 13th century but transmitted at the end of the 14th century in El Escorial MS. K-III-4.
