Estudio morfológico y anatómico de la "yerba del pollo", "Alternanthera pungens" Humboldt, Bonpland et Kunth (Amaranthaceae), para su reconocimiento farmacobotánico

La «yerba del pollo», Alternanthera pungens H. B. K. (Amaranthaceae) es una planta muy utilizada en la medicina popular argentina; se le atribuyen las siguientes propiedades: depurativa, regularizadora de las funciones estomacales e intestinales, ligeramente laxante y diurética. En el comercio se presenta fragmentada o picada, constituida por trozos de raíces, tallos, hojas y espigas punzantes. A los fines de facilitar su identificación, se han reunido en este trabajo una descripción externa de la planta y los aspectos más sobresalientes de la anatomía interna de la raíz, tallo y hoja, con esquemas y fotografías que ilustran el texto. Además se ha hecho referencia a la cosecha y comercialización de esta droga vegetal, señalándose como principal centro acopiador a la localidad cordobesa de La Paz en el Departamento San Javier. La magnitud alcanzada por su comercio que en ese lugar supera las 30 tm anuales, ofrece una idea de su importancia dentro de las plantas medicinales espontáneas del país y ha sido el motivo por el cual se ha recomendado su incorporación a la Farmacopea Nacional Argentina.
Alternanthera pungens H. B. K. (Amaranthaceae) is a plant much used in Argentina popular medicine and is said to possess the following properties: purifier and regulative of the stomach and intestinal functions, slightly laxative and diuretic. On the market it appears fragmented or in tiny bits of roots, stalks, leaves and sharp spikes. In order to make its identification easier, in this paper we have included a description of what the plant looks like and the moat salient features of the inner part of the root, stalk and leaf together with drawings and photographs to illustrate the text. Furthermore reference has been made to the harvesting and sale of this vegetal drug. La Paz in the Departamento San Javier, in the province of Córdoba being considered the main production area. Its sale which in its place reaches over 30 tons yearly gives an idea of its importance among the spontaneous medicinal plants in the country and it is due to this fact that its incorporation to the «Argentine National Pharmacopea has been recommended.
