In thispaper we propose a review through a series of readings that have put thequestion of time and history as key interpretation of Machiavelli´s politicalthought to show, following a series ofselecting elements in them, how theconcepts of contingency and conflict can be understood in the light of amaterialist conception of temporality. Toconclude, we will try to outline some indication of how this perspective allowsto think political institutions, taking into account that the reflections ontime have always been directly linked to a theory of action. To achieve thisanalysis we will particularly detain in the question of the duration. One ofthe contributions that we consider significant about the reading that wepropose is, in general, recover some elements to show, from Machiavelli, analternative to the current readings that make the relationship betweencontingency and conflict the base of a theory of the political event.
