The LPLR has demonstrated to have a biostimulating effect on various cell types. As regards the bone regeneration, the first events are crucial for the bone quality. Objective: We aimed at evaluating, morphollogically and histomorphometrically, the response of the post-extraction alveolar bone to LPLR. Materials and methods: Male Wistar rats (n=16) were anaesthetized and the extraction of both lower first molars was performed. The alveoli on the left side were irradiated with He-Ne laser with 4 J/cm2 for 1.30 minutes. Contralateral alveoli were not irradiated. The animals were sacrificed 7 days after the extraction. The hemimandibles were dissected, fixed, demineralized, and processed to be then embedded in paraffin. Serial vestibulo-lingual sections were made at the level of the mesial socket of the first molar, stained with H/E and observed microscopically. The software Image Pro Plus 4.1 was used in order to analize histomorphometrically the osteocytic area, the percentage of trabecular bone, and the amount of osteocytes and osteoblasts/mm. Results: in the LPLR treated group, an important increase in the number of osteoblasts, beginning of osteoid production, and wide osteocytic lacunae with angiogenesis was seen, unlike the control. Histomorphometric data showed that the difference in quantity of osteoblasts per lineal mm (670 in the experimental group, compared with 420 in the control group) was statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: These results prove that the LPLR produce a biostimulating effect in the early post-extraction repair of the alveolar bone of rats.
