Una serie de bocetos al óleo de James McNeill Whistler presenta un caso particular en la obra de este pintor, reconocido como uno de los iniciadores de la estética del ?arte por el arte? en Inglaterra. Se propone un recorrido por textos contemporáneos de las obras, en los que se alude a los Seis proyectos, a fin de ubicarlos en el contexto de la obra de Whistler y en relación con sus postulados estéticos. Nos interesa demostrar en especial el carácter central de estas pinturas en la obra de Whistler, a pesar de su estado inacabado. En el entramado de estos textos, los Seis proyectos encarnarían las contradicciones substanciales de este artista de manera tan clara como se presentan en sus pinturas más reconocidas, así como permitirían asociar la obra de Whistler con el arte posterior, en aspectos tales como el arte abstracto y el fragmento modernista.
A series of oil sketches by James McNeill Whistler embodies a particular case in the art of this painter, known as one of the precursors of “art for art’s sake” in England. This paper will examine texts written by Whistler himself and a few of his contemporaries, in which the Six Projects are discussed. The aim of this essay is to establish relations between the sketches and the rest of Whistler’s production, as well as with the painter’s aesthetic theories. We seek to demonstrate the central role of the Six Projects in Whistler’s career, in spite of his unfinished state. In the framework of these texts, the Six Projects would incarnate some of the essential contradictions of this artist, as well as would permit to link Whistler’s art with posterity, for instance, with abstract art and the theory of modernist fragment.
