El Buen Sheriff: entre la virtud y la obligación

A través del análisisde dos sheriffs de westerns clásicos y conflictivos, High Noon y Rio Bravo, estetexto mostrará que la polémica entre ellos no es, como suele entenderse, acercade cómo un sheriff debería comportarse frente al peligro sino acerca de quéhace que un buen sheriff sea realmente un buen sheriff: el deber o la virtud.Así, el análisis mostrará que el sheriff de HighNoon es un perfecto agente moral kantiano mientras que el de Rio Bravo un perfecto agentearistotélico. La puesta en discusión entre ellos es, entonces, la puesta endiscusión de una ética deontológica con una ética de la virtud.
This text will analyze the sheriffs from two conflictive and classical western films, High Noon and Rio Bravo. Through this analysis, it will show that the discussion between them is not, as is usually argued, about how a sheriff should react when facing danger but about what makes a good sheriff a really good sheriff: acting for the sake of duty or for the sake of virtue. Thus, this analysis will show that the sheriff of High Noon is a perfect Kantian moral agent while the one in Rio Bravo is a perfect Aristotelian moral agent. The discussion between them, then, can be understood as the discussion between deontological and virtues ethics.
