Ad Imaginem et Similitudinem: The Creation of Man in Isidore of Seville

En distintas obras el obispo Isidoro de Sevilla (c. 560-636) se ocupa de la creación del mundo y del hombre, y de cuestiones teológicas afines como la relación entre creador y criatura, tiempo y eternidad, caída y salvación. En De natura rerum, Etymologiae e incluso también en Sententiae Isidoro aborda estos interrogantes íntimamente vinculados a preocupaciones doctrinales y pastorales. Este trabajo se propone analizar principalmente cómo Isidoro, basado en fuentes patrísticas y bíblicas, concibe la creación del hombre y sus consecuencias. ¿Cuál era la posición del hombre dentro del plan divino? Creado a imagen de su creador, el hombre era, no obstante, una criatura, corruptible y mortal. Este estudio busca analizar cómo impacta esta condición especial del hombre en el pensamiento de Isidoro.
Several works of Bishop Isidore of Seville (c. AD 560-636) deal with the creation of the world and mankind, and subsidiary theological questions such as the relation between creator and creature, time and eternity, and fall and salvation. In De natura rerum, Etymologiae and even in the Sententiae Isidore occupies himself with these issues closely related to pastoral and doctrinal concerns. This paper focuses primarily on how Isidore, based on patristic and biblical sources, conceives the creation of man and its consequences. What was the place of man within the divine order? Made in the image of his Creator, man was also a creature, corruptible and mortal. The main question posed by this essay is how this special condition of man impacted Isidore's thought.
