El Foro Económico Internacional de San Petersburgo (SPIEF): un intersticio de multilateralidad para el Sur Global

Entre el 18 y 21 de junio de 2025 se llevó a cabo la edición número 28 del Foro Económico Internacional de San Petersburgo (SPIEF) en la ciudad homónima de Rusia. Este evento, que durante cuatro días reunió a más de veinticuatro mil personas provenientes de más de ciento cuarenta países, es mucho más que una mera instancia de discusión de la agenda económica actual. Entonces, ¿qué es verdaderamente SPIEF? A fin de dilucidar las principales características y alcances de esta plataforma, el presente comentario se propone tres objetivos específicos. En primer lugar, describir el surgimiento y la evolución de SPIEF a la luz de las transformaciones geopolíticas de las últimas décadas; en segundo lugar, destacar las principales temáticas y resultados logrados en la edición de 2025; y, finalmente, identificar las implicancias y potencialidades que este foro ofrece para los países del Sur Global.
Between June 18th and 21st of 2025, the 28th edition of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) was held in the Russian city of the same name. This event, which over the course of four days brought together more than twenty-four thousand participants from over one hundred and forty countries, is much more than a mere platform for discussing the current economic agenda. So, what is SPIEF really about? In order to clarify the main features and scope of this platform, this commentary pursues three specific objectives. First, to describe the origins and evolution of SPIEF in light of the geopolitical transformations of recent decades; second, to highlight the main themes and outcomes of the 2025 edition; and finally, to identify the implications and potential this forum holds for the countries of the Global South.
