En 1979 Y 1980 los autores llevaron a cabo investigaciones arqueológicas en la zona de! Río Capillas, a unos 35 km al ENE de la ciudad de San Salvador de Jujuy, Provincia de Jujuy, República Argentina. Los resultados de que aquí se informa son los primeros datos concretos obtenidos hasta la fecha, mediante prospecciones sistemáticas y excavaciones, en una región que es crucial en e! estudio del desplazamiento aborigen y del aprovechamiento prehispánico de los recursos ambientales.
New finds in the Río Capillas area, 35 km to the ENE of the cite ot Jujuy, in Suhandean territory, allow for the hypothesis that area was crossed by pottery-making groups from the Early Period Pottery Complex of San Francisco (which has an initial date, to the east, of around 620 b.C.), on their way South of San Salvador de Jujuy, and that, much later, terraces in the area were used for cultivation by groups related, or belonging to, the Late cultures of the Quebrada de Humahuaca area to the West. The importance of corrugated and nail-impressed pottery is strengthened here and allows for the suggestion of 2 different traditions moving with different speed in the area.
