Disciplina tipográfica en América Latina : Reflexiones para la descolonización cultural, profesional y pedagógica

Los diseñadores gráficos, en buena medida, son herederos de la historia tipográfica americana. Una historia que, apenas estamos construyendo, que aún guarda muchos interrogantes y que se toma prestada a otras historias —como la que hicieron los bibliógrafos, como José Toribio Medina—. Una historia que pone a aquellos en un lugar de privilegio, pero también, demanda un alto grado de compromiso. Podríamos afirmar que, si los diseñadores conocen la historia de su comunidad, se acercan a su identidad y, de esa manera, pueden ampliar su universo cultural y visual, lo que les permite seleccionar referentes más pertinentes para sus diseños y hacer reinterpretaciones formales y significantes.
This work presents a brief situation regarding the typographic field in Latin America. It extensively deals with the definition of typography by examining subjects such as heritage, identity, technology, education, investigation and design practices, following a regional perspective, taking into account that this field has been historically defined under a Eurocentric vision, and that today´s incipient development of the aforementioned issues could contribute to the construction of a geopolitical and socially responsible positioning, leading to a hypothetical decolonization. In order to visualize this concept, the pen of a number of Latin American thinkers was used, and it was connected to theoretical perspectives of different referents on the subject matter, using their own experiences and others close by.
