Categorización social de personas según dos grupos etarios: jóvenes y adultos mayores

Resumen: Las personas suelen ser categorizadas a través de diversos descriptores: edad, sexo, status social, vestimenta, ocupación, actitud psicológica, entre otros. La investigación se propone comparar el uso de tales categorías que hacen los jóvenes y los adultos mayores para describir fotos de personas de diferentes edades. El objetivo es identificar coincidencias y diferencias. Los participantes (114 jóvenes y 102 mayores) debían describir brevemente el contenido de dos fotos: la de un joven y la de una anciana. Además de la edad y el género, las fotos variaban en cuanto al estado de ánimo-actitud (variable psicológica), y la apariencia-rol social (variable sociológica). En ambos grupos etarios el sexo predomina por sobre la edad en la foto-joven; lo contrario ocurre con la foto-anciana. Las referencias sociológicas predominan en foto-joven. Pero hay diferencias importantes entre los dos grupos etarios. La edad cuenta más para los jóvenes, especialmente en foto-anciana; también los jóvenes recurren más a vestimenta y situación-acción. Los mayores asocian menos a foto-anciana con familia. Los dos grupos etarios coinciden en diferencias significativas respecto a ambas fotos, pero también se encuentran diferencias inter-grupos. Todo esto muestra la existencia de patrones intergeneracionales diferentes de categorización social.
Abstract: The most usual descriptors to characterize people are: age, sex, social status, psychological-sociological traits deduced from the appearance, among others. This research aims to compare the descriptive categories used by young people and older adults to describe two photos of people of different ages. Participants (114 young people and 102 older adults) had to describe briefly two photos: one of a young boy and the other of an elderly woman. In addition to age and gender, the photos varied in terms of mood-attitude (psychological variable) and appearance-social role (sociological variable). In both age-groups, sex predominates over age in the young boy-photo; the opposite happens with the photo of the elderly-woman. Sociological references predominate in the young boy- photo. But there are important differences between the two age-groups. Age is more important for young people, especially in the elderly woman-photo; young people resort more to clothing and situation-action. In turn, older adults associate less the elderly woman-photo with family. The two age-groups agree on significant differences between the two photos, but there are also inter-groups differences. All this shows that there are intergenerational differences in the way to characterize people.
