Abstract: Starting from a comparative analysis between the Viceroyalties of New Spain and Rio de la Plata, this article intends to find the distinctive characteristics of the Rio de la Plata, in order to answer three capital questions: What was the viceroyalty significance as territorial concentration; Which were the “Intendentes” (governor’s) new powers, given by the “Real Ordenanza de Intendente’s”; and which was the relationship between them and the Viceroys.
