The work of Mercedes Barros focuses on one of the most important social movements of recent history in Argentina. Originated during the most dramatic years of the last military dictatorship, the human rights movement, alive and vigorous until present, has become a symbol of collective struggle and resistance as well as a bastion of democratic values in the post-dictatorship Argentinean context. In this book Barros presents a highly coherent and original investigation of the process of emergence and constitution of this movement and its discourse contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of this new form of popular mobilization around human rights issues. Este libro explica el proceso de surgimiento y constitución del movimiento y el discurso de derechos humanos en Argentina. Es central para esta mirada la afirmación de que el surgimiento del movimiento no debe entenderse como una necesaria o como una respuesta natural a las atrocidades cometidas por el régimen militar pasado, sino como el resultado de un proceso contingente de articulación política y como una respuesta que podría haber fracasado en su constitución y su éxito. Por lo tanto, la aparición del movimiento de derechos humanos y el discurso en el país sólo se puede entender en toda su complejidad si se presta atención a este mismo proceso de movilización popular y la articulación política que tuvo lugar durante 1976-1982
