The objective of the present work is to analyse the effectiveness of Government intervention in the cattle and beef industries from 2005 onwards, whose goal was to control the domestic price of beef and ensure an adequate supply of the domestic market. In order to analyse whether the intervention was effective, the historical evolution (from 1970-2012 and in the case of beef prices, from 1990-2012) of five main indicators of the cattle and beef industries will be examined. These indicators are: cattle stock, sector productivity (net beef production), consumer prices, domestic beef consumption per capita and beef exports. The essay argues, on balance, that the measures implemented by the Government were not effective, as they did not lead to the objectives intended in the medium and long run. Consequently, the cattle and beef industries were severely damaged by Government intervention and measures resulted in an increase in the price of beef and a reduction in domestic beef consumption. A limitation of the present work is the impossibility to carry out econometric regressions due to data being unreliable.
