En la segunda novela de Stevie Smith, Over the Frontier (1938), se encuentran presentes numerosos pensamientos por parte del narrador-personaje, Pompey Casmilus, acerca de la definición y el valor de lo literario, el lugar del artista en la sociedad, los temas elegidos por los escritores ingleses, la función de los críticos literarios y de los diarios, entre otras preocupaciones. Tanto estas reflexiones y pensamientos como algunas características particulares de la narrativa de Smith - la utilización del lenguaje conversacional y lo fragmentario, entre otros recursos- se relacionan con la búsqueda de la escritora de un espacio propio dentro del mundo literario del siglo XX en Inglaterra, rebelándose ante la alta cultura victoriana.
In the second novel by Stevie Smith, Over the Frontier (1938), there are numerous thoughts by the narrator, Pompey Casmilus, about the definition and value of literature, the place of the artist in society, the topics chosen by English writers, the role of the literary critics and newspapers, among other concerns. Both these reflections and thoughts, as well as some characteristics of the narrative of Smith - the use of conversational language and the fragmentary, among other features-related with the writer finding her own space within the twentieth-century literary world in England, rebelling against Victorian high culture.
