High-Quality Seed Assessment in Globe Artichoke Using a Single Conductivity Test

- Artichokes (Cynara cardunculus var. scolymus) cultivars obtained from seed are becoming widely used, but plantation failure, lateness of production, and low-quality seeds are still registered. Consequently, obtaining high-quality achene emerges as a crucial point in breeding programmes. Rapid tests, such as the electrical conductivity (EC) test, provide fast and consistent results regarding stratification of seed lots by vigour. Since information about the EC test in artichoke remains unknown, the aim of this work was to evaluate the potential of this test in assessing artichoke seed vigour, in comparison to germination test. Continuous EC was measured on individual seeds from three lots of artichoke. On the other hand, a routine first count test was performed on seeds from each lot. The EC curves revealed differences between seed lots, being the third one the highest vigour lot, possibly due to low rainfall observed during flowering period in this season. Moreover, EC analysis showed vigour values comparable to the first count test in all lots. These results suggest that the EC test shows considerable potential for use in routine testing to select high-quality artichoke seed.
