En este artículo me propongo indagar en la vinculación entre animales y utopía. Específicamente, en los usos que se hicieron de los animales en la literatura utópica británica del siglo XVIII, a partir de analizar la influencia que el célebre viaje del Capitán Lemuel Gulliver al país de los houyhnhnms pareciera haber tenido en otros textos utópicos del período. Así, espero señalar cómo, a partir de reflexionar sobre la naturaleza de los animales –y de los hombres–, algunos escritores utilizaron la utopía para criticar y satirizar la sociedad inglesa de su tiempo.
In this article I propose to investigate the link between animals and utopia. Specifically, in the uses that were made of animals in the utopian British literature of the eighteenth century, by analyzing the influence that the famous travel of Captain Lemuel Gulliver to the country of the houyhnhnms seems to have had in other utopian texts of the period. Thus, I hope to point out how, by reflecting on the nature of animals - and men - some utopian writers criticized and satirized English society of its time.
