El artículo repasa la trayectoria de Julius Lips, etnólogo alemán que en el período de entreguerras huyó del ascendente régimen nazi para instalarse en los Estados Unidos. Lips consolidó su carrera profesional en Norteamérica, llevó a cabo su trabajo de campo etnográfico entre los algonquinos y publicó su contribución antropológica más importante, The Savage hits Back. La obra analiza una colección de objetos etnográficos reunida por el propio Lips que documenta las formas en las que el “arte salvaje” representa al hombre blanco y anticipa lo que hoy se denomina “antropología inversa”: la capacidad nativa de objetivar a sus propios observadores.
The article reviews the trajectory of Julius Lips, German ethnologist who before the Second World War fled from the Nazis to settle in the United States. In North America Lips consolidated his professional career, carried out ethnographic fieldwork among the Algonquian-speaking peoples, and published his most important anthropological contribution: The Savage Hits Back. This book analyzes a collection of ethnographic objects gathered by Lips himself that documents the ways in which “savage art” represents the White man and anticipates what is now called “reverse anthropology”: the native capacity to objectify his own observers.
