Las sanciones a las conductas reprensibles de misioneros en las reducciones jesuíticas de guaraníes (siglo XVIII): entre el control y la laxitud

En este artículo se analizan las sanciones a las conductas reprensibles de misioneros en las reducciones jesuíticas de guaraníes, sanciones establecidas en instancias locales de toma de decisiones durante las décadas de 1730 y 1740.Para esto, se utiliza como fuente un Libro de consultas que contiene síntesis de dichas instancias (como juntas, consultas y congregaciones provinciales) entre 1731 y 1747. A lo largo del artículo, se presentan brevemente las características del proceso de toma de decisiones en la provincia del Paraguay, se analizan las referencias a dos misioneros (Alejandro Villavieja y Jerónimo Zacarías), se estudian las faltas que habrían cometido y las sanciones formuladas contra ellos y se focaliza en el consenso que parecen gozar estas penalizaciones entre los jesuitas reunidos en consultas. La hipótesis principal que se despliega en este artículo es que durante parte de las décadas de 1730 y 1740 existió una estructura de control y auto-disciplinamiento entre los propios misioneros del Paraguay, quienes utilizaron las instancias locales de toma de decisiones para controlar lo que sucedía entre ellos. Ahora bien, aparentemente, en este período, esa estructura no habría sido empleada para disciplinar también a la población indígena, por lo menos en el aspecto religioso.
This article analyzes the sanctionson the inappropriate behaviors of missionaries in the Jesuit-Guarani reductions, penalties laid down in local instances of decision making during the decades of 1730 and 1740.For this purpose, I used a Libro de consultas (Book of Consults) as a source. This document includes summaries of these instances of administration (such as juntas —meetings—, consultas—enquiries— and congregaciones provincials —provincial congregations—) between 1731 and 1747.Along the article, I study the characteristics of the decision making process in the province of Paraguay, the references to two missionaries (Alejandro Villavieja and JerónimoZacarías), the offenses that they allegedly have committed and the penalties prescribed for them. I also emphasize the presumable consensus of the decisions taken by the Jesuits at theconsultas.The main hypothesis of this article is the following: a structure of control and self-disciplining existed during the decades of 1730 and 1740 between the missionaries of Paraguay, who also used the local instances of decision making to control what happened between them.However, during this period that structure was not apparently employed to discipline the indigenous people, at least with respect to the religious aspect.
