El artículo analiza las características y las repercusiones de la controversia sobre la posesión diabólica en Inglaterra liderada por el exorcista puritano John Darrell y el eclesiástico conservador Samuel Harsnett entre finales del siglo XVI y comienzos del XVII. El objetivo de la investigación es demostrar que los autores de tratados sobre brujería publicados en aquel periodo reivindicaron las desposesiones de Darrell al mismo tiempo que atacaban otros elementos del statu quo religioso defendido por la Iglesia de Inglaterra.
This article studies the features and repercussions of the debate about demonic possession in England leaded by Puritan exorcist John Darrell and conservative clergyman Samuel Harsnett between the end of the sixteenth and the beginning of the seventeenth century. The aim of the research is to demonstrate that the authors of witchcraft treatises published during the period vindicated Darrell´s dispossessions while at the same time attacked other aspects of the religious statu quo defended by the Church of England.
