Los incendios forestales en Australia: ¿estamos inevitablemente "al horno"?

Los incendios forestales del verano australiano 2019/2020 han tenido efectos catastróficos sobre la flora, la fauna, el ambiente en general y la economía. Si bien los incendios forestales en Australia son comunes y generalmente tienen causas naturales, aunque no puede descartarse que algunos focos sean intencionales, esta vez estos eventos tienen algunas características singulares: (a) comenzaron mucho antes de lo habitual; (b) se dan en un contexto climático local, regional y global muy particular que combina calor extremo, sequía prolongada y fuertes vientos con factores ligados a la dinámica de climática en el Océano Índico y una mayor probabilidad de ocurrencia y magnitud de los incendios forestales a nivel global; (c) condicionantes económicos, como agronegocios; y (d) políticos, que priorizan intereses sectoriales específicos. Siempre se pueden evitar males mayores cuando se está preparado. El desafío para Argentina es estar preparado para que los incendios forestales que ocurren, en diversas regiones del país en diferente épocas del año, no generen efectos catastróficos. Para eso es imprescindible contar con estrategias y políticas adecuadas. El cambio climático no ayuda, pero menos aún la inacción, la desaprensión y la desatención de pensar que todo lo resuelve mágicamente el mercado.
Australian forest fires, ocurred last summer (2019/2020) had catastrophic effects on vegetation, wildlife, environment and economy. Although forest fires in Australia are common and generally have natural causes -although it cannot be ruled out that some events could be intentional-, this time these events have some unique characteristics: (a) they started much earlier than usual; (b) occur in a very particular local, regional and global climate context that combines extreme heat, prolonged drought and strong winds with factors linked to the dynamics of the climate in the Indian Ocean and a greater probability of occurrence and magnitude of forest fires globally; (c) economic issues (agrobusiness) and (d) political factors, that prioritize specific sectoral interests. Major worse evils can always be avoided when society is prepared. The challenge for Argentina is to be prepared so that the forest fires that occur in different regions of the country at different times of the year do not generate catastrophic effects. For this, it is essential to have adequate strategies and policies. Climate change does not help, but even less inaction, unlearning and neglecting to think that everything is magically solved by the market.
