Descripción
Many studies have examined the relationship between virtuous moral character and flourishing (i.e. the experience of living well, feeling good, and functioning effectively). However, empirical studies focused on intellectual character as a predictor of flourishing are scarce. This article aims to contribute to filling this gap by studying the associations among: (i) intellectual humility (a willingness to own one’s intellectual weaknesses and strengths), (ii) virtuous intellectual character (consisting of a set of five other intellectual virtues: curiosity, autonomy, attentiveness, carefulness, and open-mindedness), (iii) honesty, and (iv) human flourishing. Moreover, we propose a theoretical model in which intellectual humility is positively associated with virtuous intellectual character, and in turn, virtuous intellectual character is positively associated with flourishing. The sample included 703 Argentinean undergraduate students between 17 and 22 years of age. A hybrid structural equation model was used to test this theoretical model. The results indicate that intellectual humility is positively correlated with virtuous intellectual character. In addition, virtuous intellectual character is directly and positively correlated with human flourishing and honesty. Finally, honesty is also positively correlated with human flourishing. The theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
