La tentación de la inteligencia: Paul de Man lee a Roland Barthes

Cuando tuvo lugar el simposio de Baltimore, «Los lenguajes críticos y las ciencias del hom­bre. Controversia estructuralista», Paul De Man era ya un especialista en romanticismo y posromanticismo francés, inglés y alemán, aun­que no tenía aún ningún libro publicado. Ro­land Barthes, en cambio, acababa de publicar Crítica y verdad y su figura había alcanzado una notoriedad pública inusitada. De Man lo leía desde de El grado cero de la escritura (1953); ha­bía escrito sobre ese libro y Michelet. Es proba­ble que las circunstancias no fueran recíprocas y que Barthes no supiera quién era De Man. El encuentro entre ambos resultó destemplado, debido a las objeciones que De Man le dirigió en el debate posterior a la lectura de «Escribir, verbo intransitivo». El artículo analiza el inter­cambio inicial, para examinar luego el ensayo «Roland Barthes and Limits of Structuralism», que De Man escribió en 1972. El propósito es mostrar cómo las lecturas de De Man ofrecen pruebas diferidas o manifiestas de resistencia teórica a las postulaciones de Barthes.
By the time of the Symposium of Baltimore, «The Structuralist Controversy: The Language of Criticism and the Sciences of Man», Paul de Man was already a specialist in French, English and German Romanticism and Post-romanticism, although he didn’t have any book published yet. On the other hand, Roland Barthes had just published Criticism and Truth and had gained some unexpected renown. De Man had been reading his books since Writing Degree Zero (1953); and had written about it and about Michelet. It is probable that there was no reciprocity and Barthes might have not known who De Man was. Their meeting turned out to be harsh because of De Man’s objections after the reading of «To Write: An Intransitive Verb?» The article analyses the initial exchange in order to continue with the essay «Roland Barthes and Limits of Structuralism» which De Man wrote in 1972. Our purpose is to show how De Man’s readings offer deferred or manifested evidence of rhetorical resistance to Barthes’s postulates.
