Enteric Methane Emission and Nitrogen Excretion of Lactating Cows Fed Soybean-Hulls as Partial Replacement of Corn Grain

- The dairy industry is under increasing pressure to reduce its environmental footprint,particularly methane emissions. One strategy to improve the sustainability of milk productionis to replace traditional feed ingredients with agricultural by-products that wouldotherwise be wasted. In our study, we evaluated whether partially replacing corn grainwith soybean hulls in the diet of lactating cows affects their productivity and environmentalimpact. Milk production and composition were not affected, but cows offered soybeanhulls ate more feed and had lower feed efficiency than those offered corn grain. Althoughmethane emission per kilogram of milk remained unchanged, cows fed soybean hullstended to produce a greater total amount of methane emitted per cow than those offeredcorn grain. Nitrogen excretion was also significantly greater in cows offered soybean hullscompared to those offered corn grain. These findings suggest that potential improvementsin nutrient circularity of soybean hulls can be jeopardized by a tendency to increase netenteric methane emissions. Further research is needed to assess the full carbon footprintand sustainability at the whole-farm level to determine if increasing the proportion ofsoybean hulls in dairy cow diets is advantageous.
