Inmigrantes galeses y pueblos indígenas patagónicos: La construcción de una representación social en la frontera (siglo XIX)

La Patagonia ha sido siempre un paisaje abierto a la imaginación que dio lugar a una serie de relatos e imágenes, muchas veces divergentes y contradictorios. Este trabajo pretende analizar las representaciones que sobre la región y sus habitantes elaboraron los inmigrantes galeses que llegaron a Chubut en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, y cómo pudieron o no adaptar ese imaginario a su realidad cotidiana en el territorio. Partiendo de entender las representaciones como un tipo de conocimiento que orienta las prácticas e interacciones sociales de los sujetos en su vida cotidiana, analizaremos qué ideas traían consigo los inmigrantes galeses y cómo las modificaron en el destino, además de cuánto tuvieron que ver en eso las características del lugar y la necesidad de supervivencia. Todo esto en un marco que consideraba a la Patagonia dentro del paradigma del “desierto” y la “barbarie” que pensaban las elites gobernantes del siglo XIX. Con este fin, analizaremos las principales crónicas escritas por inmigrantes galeses, así como algunos testimonios de viajeros europeos que recorrieron la Patagonia al mismo tiempo que se desarrollaba el establecimiento galés.
Patagonia has always been a landscape open to the imagination that gave rise to a series of stories and images, often divergent and contradictory. This work aims to analyze the representations that the Welsh immigrants, who arrived in Chubut in the second half of the 19th century, created about the region and its inhabitants and how they could or could not adapt that imaginary to their daily reality in the territory. Starting from understanding representations as a type of knowledge that guides the social practices and interactions of the subjects in their daily lives, we will analyze what ideas the Welsh immigrants brought with them and how they modified them in the destination, in addition to how much the characteristics of the place and the need for survival influenced this. All this in a framework that considered Patagonia within the paradigm of “desert” and “barbarism” that the ruling elites of the 19th century thought. To this end, we will analyze the main chronicles written by Welsh immigrants, as well as some testimonies from European travelers who toured Patagonia at the same time that the Welsh settlement was developing.
