“Apenas puedo conmigo, ¿voy a poder con otra persona?”: Expectativas de mujeres con discapacidad física frente al ideal de maternidad

Los feminismos han evidenciado la inadecuación de la fórmula que equipara a la mujer con la función reproductora y a la maternidad como un destino ineludible. Para las mujeres con discapacidad ello no sería equivalente: en contraste con el ideal de maternidad socialmente construido, su capacidad para reproducir y/o cuidar de otros/as es cuestionada. A partir de entrevistas en profundidad a mujeres, cis, heterosexuales con discapacidad física de la Región Metropolitana de Buenos Aires, este artículo se centra en sus expectativas en torno a la maternidad. Destacan que esta es una meta difícil de concretar y/o imaginar debido a sus impedimentos físicos, a diversos temores, a la falta de solvencia económica y donde el riesgo y el egoísmo, en tanto afectos, modulan también dichas expectativas.
Feminist perspectives have highlighted the inadequacy of the formula that equates women with the reproductive function and motherhood as an inevitable destiny. For disabled women, this equivalence does not hold: in contrast to the socially constructed ideal of motherhood, their capacity to reproduce and/or care for others is questioned. This article describes and analyzes the expectations of motherhood among seventeen cisgender, heterosexual women with motor and visual disabilities, aged 22 to 38, who have not had children and reside in the Metropolitan Region of Buenos Aires. The analysis, based on in-depth interviews, explores the negotiation they undertake between the social mandate of motherhood and the perceived limitations. Findings highlight that motherhood is a difficult goal to materialize and/or imagine due to their physical impairments, various fears, lack of financial solvency, and the social stigma of being perceived as risky or selfish. In sum, they shape expectations that lead to a complex negotiation of motherhood, which is challenged by ableist social structures.
