Si bien el surgimiento del diseño moderno en México se dio hacia la década de 1940, es necesario describir el contexto político en el que nació, pues los debates que se generaron alrededor de estas propuestas se enmarcan en el proceso de la Revolución mexicana que impulsaba el progreso tecnológico, el crecimiento económico y la búsqueda de una identidad cultural.
The Modern Movement arises in Mexico, as in all Latin America, from the confrontation of external forces, generated in Europe and the United States, and internal forces with the political, economic and cultural characteristics of each country. The political and economic orientation fueled the debate between architects and designers. Clara Porset is an important figure who was instrumental in promoting industrial design. At the same time, Michael van Beuren, originally from the United States, established in Mexico a firm dedicated to design furniture in the international style. The work presented here contrasts the work of Porset and van Beuren, as an example of designers who, although they started from approaches originated in the Bauhaus, due to their ideologies, gave different results. It is in the dialogue between these two aspects that the Modern Design in Mexico is formed.
