Tras la Edad Media : la retórica del Quijote

Resumen: Desde la Antigüedad Clásica y a través de la Edad Media, la Retórica, una de las tres disciplinas del "Trivium", se consideró siempre imprescindible para la formación del hombre culto, siend o así una de las instituciones medievales que llegan vivas al Renacimiento . En el siglo de Cervantes se alimentó de una serie de manuales universitarios que comienzan con el compendio de Antonio de Nebrija . Cabría pensar, en consecuencia, que la formulación del Quijote sea deudora de las recetas que suministra la Retórica, lo que no parece cierto, ya que sus fórmulas son generales y sir - ven tanto para el latín de donde salieron como para el español o cualquier otra lengua : no se dan en el Quijote porque Cervantes las aprendiera en las retóricas, sino que aparecen en las retórica s porque se dan en el Quijote y en otras muchas realizaciones del discurso . Sin embargo, la maestría e intensidad que cabe advertir en el empleo de determinados recursos (muy especialmente el de la ironía) pueden ser la clave que explique la densidad semántica del texto y dé razón de por qué cons - tituye una obra clásica.
Abstract: Since Classic Antiquity and throughout the Middle Ages, Rhetoric had been considered as on e of the three disciplines of the "Trivium", necessary for the education of the cultivated man, thu s remaining one of the medieval institutions to last until the Renaissance . In Cervantes century it profited from a series of university manuals that began with Antonio de Nebrija's collection . It coul d be thought, in consequence, that the formulation in the Quijote was influenced by the rules provided by Rhetoric, which does not seem true, since its formulae are general and apply to Latin, where they carne from, as well as to Spanish or any other language : they do not appear in the Quijote because Cervantes learnt them in the rhetoric manuals, on the contrary, they appear in the rhetoric manuals because they appear in the Quijote and in many other manifestations of discourse . However, the geniality and the intensity to be found in the use of certain devices (specially the one of irony) might be the key to explain the semantic density of the book and account for the fact that it constitutes a classic.
