The use of bibliometric indicators has been under discussion for at least a decade. Bibliometric indicators do not adapt to the objects they measure. However, there is an increasingly pressing challenge to resignify the information organized in highly structured databases, so that it will tell us more about scientific activity and its impact on current societies. We are interested in determining whether scientific knowledge has led to any kind of benefits for the societies that support it and in identifying the dynamics underlying the flows of knowledge and solutions that they propose. In this article, we consider Chagas disease using a bibliometric methodology which expands the time horizon and includes external variables and methodologies for qualitative interpretation that underpin previous critiques. This methodology enables us to evaluate the impact of a century of research driven by different political strategies of regional and international scope and which aimed to resolve the problem. - Materia
