Our research on the Upper Cretaceous Bajo Barreal Formation presents a unique perspective on the vertical (temporal) changes in the stacking density of fluvial channel belt deposits, a characteristic feature of ancient successions at outcrop and subsurface. While it's commonly accepted that the occurrence of high and low-accommodation systems tracts is influenced by the rate of sediment supply and space available for sedimentation, the relative importance of tectonic (changes in basin subsidence), base level, and climate (changes in water supply, sediment supply, paleosols, and vegetation types) remains unclear. To shed light on this, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of the distribution, external architecture, and internal organization of channel belt deposits, as well as a paleopedological study in the ~ 385 m thick succession of the Cerro Ballena anticline, southwest area of the Golfo San Jorge basin, Patagonia.
