La existencia de la bohemia porteña de entre siglos ha sido puesta enfáticamente en duda por algunos de sus eventuales protagonistas; aunque ese énfasis en la negación estaría revelando, antes que nada, el éxito de “bohemia” como el término más adecuado para sintetizar un conjunto de rasgos diferenciales del ambiente literario y artístico porteño del período. Rubén Darío y Manuel Gálvez son dos de las figuras más relevantes que, por diferentes razones, han quedado asociadas con la vida bohemia porteña. Darío, como el guía indiscutido de un grupo de escritores y artistas, en su mayoría jóvenes, que animaban las tertulias nocturnas de algunas cervecerías y restaurantes de Buenos Aires en la última década del siglo XIX. Gálvez, como el autor del El mal metafísico (1916), exitosa novela –de indisimulado carácter autobiográfico- en la que cuenta la patética historia del poeta bohemio Carlos Riga y sus bohemios amigos y conocidos del café La Brasileña.
The existence of Buenos Aires bohemia between centuries has been emphatically questioned by some of its possible protagonists; although that emphasis on denial would be revealing, first of all, the success of "bohemia" as the most appropriate term to synthesize a set of differential features of the literary and artistic environment of Buenos Aires during the period. Rubén Darío and Manuel Gálvez are two of the most relevant figures who, for different reasons, have been associated with the Buenos Aires bohemian life. Darío, as the undisputed guide of a group of writers and artists, mostly young people, who encouraged the night gatherings of some breweries and restaurants in Buenos Aires in the last decade of the 19th century. Galvez, as the author of The Metaphysical Evil (1916), a successful novel –of indisimulated autobiographical character- in which he tells the pathetic story of the bohemian poet Carlos Riga and his bohemian friends and acquaintances of La Brasileña coffee.
