Las consideraciones de Hayden White en torno de la escritura histórica han tenido un fuerte impacto en la discusión contemporánea sobre la relación entre Historia y Verdad. El interés por los diversos niveles que forjan una Historia o una Filosofía de la historia, el énfasis en la importancia de los recursos poéticos y lingüísticos y, por consiguiente, la puesta en escena de la tensión que existe entre la documentación de un conjunto de hechos y la concepción de un sentido para el pasado han sido vistos por algunos en línea con un ideario político relativista (y conservador). El presente trabajo lleva a cabo un análisis del cuerpo fundamental de hipótesis de White y de algunas de las críticas más importantes que ha recibido.El alcance del tema no se reduce a la disciplina histórica. Buena parte de las ciencias sociales y las humanidades abrevan en sus estudios, de modo que resulta fundamental hoy distinguir entre una mirada compleja y sus supuestos efectos relativistas. Complejidad y relativismo no deberían confundirse y merece la pena intentar entonces una separación de la potencia analítica de los textos de White respecto de la debilidad de algunas de sus propuestas en relación a la investigación histórica.
Hayden White considerations around historical writing have had a strong impact on the contemporary debate about the relationship between History and Truth. The interest in the different levels that shape a History or a Philosophy of history, the emphasis on the importance of language and poetic devices and therefore the staging of the tension between the documentation of a set of facts and the conception of a sense for the past have been seen by some in line with a relativistic (and conservative) political ideology. This paper conducts an analysis of the fundamental hypothesis by White and some of the major criticisms they have received.The question about the relationship between Truth and History is not simply limited to the scope of researches in this discipline. Much of the social sciences and humanities rely on their studies, so that today it is essential to distinguish between a complex look and its alleged relativistic effects. Complexity should not be confused with relativism and that is why it is worth trying a separation of the analytical power of White’s texts and the weakness of some of his proposals in relation to the present of historical research.
