- This dataset contains microphotographs and derived measurements of ice particles obtained in a laboratory study of ice particle growth habits under upper tropospheric cloud conditions, with temperatures ranging from −36 °C to −44 °C. The laboratory experiment simulates cirrus cloud formation inside a controlled cloud chamber. Ice particles formed within the cloud chamber are sampled using the plastic replica method (Schaefer, 1956), allowing detailed observation of particle morphology. Microphotographs (40X magnification) of ice particle replicas were processed using image analysis techniques to extract quantitative descriptors of particle shape and size.

Abstract. This dataset contains microphotographs of ice particles present in a laboratory study of ice particle growth habits under upper tropospheric conditions (with temperatures between -36 °C and -44 °C). The laboratory experiment simulates cirrus cloud formation inside a cloud chamber. The ice particles present in the cloud chamber are sampled via the plastic replica method (Schaefer, V. J. (1956). A new method for the study of ice crystals. Journal of Meteorology, 13, 566–569.). In situ measurements of ice particles are typically limited to sizes between 25 and 2300 μm, leaving a gap in the characterization of smaller particles (< 50 μm). This laboratory study addresses that limitation by analyzing microphotographs (40x magnification) of ice particle replicas. This dataset also contains a table with numeric data of six physical magnitudes of shape and size of those analyzed ice particles present in the cloud chamber during the laboratory experiment: circularity, aspect ratio, roundness, area, perimeter, and effective diameter. The dataset contributes to improve microphysical parameterizations in meteorological and radiative transfer models.
