La prensa católica como fuente para una historia intelectual del catolicismo argentino del siglo XIX: un estudio de caso

En este trabajo indago sobre las nuevas perspectivas historiográficas relativas al estudio de la prensa del siglo XIX, con particular énfasis en las más recientes miradas sobre el periodismo católico del período. A partir de ello, sostengo que dichas publicaciones pueden enriquecer la historia intelectual del catolicismo argentino de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Luego me centro en el estudio de un caso –la recepción del libro Historia del conflicto entre la religión y la ciencia, de John William Draper, por el periódico católico La América del Sud– para ponderar las posibilidades de su análisis a partir de un enfoque anclado en la historia intelectual.
In this article I address the new historiographical perspectives related to the study of the nineteenth century press, with a particular emphasis on the catholic journalism of that time. On that basis, I uphold the pertinence of making use of such publications to construct an intellectual history of Argentinian Catholicism in the latter half of the nineteenth century. I afterwards focus on a case study –the reception of John William Draper’s History of the Conflict between Religion and Science by the catholic newspaper La América del Sud– to ponder the possibilities an intellectual history approach may open for its analysis.
