Un profano en el desierto: reescrituras de “El viajero” de Juan José Saer

En gran parte de su obra ficcional y ensayística, Juan José Saer cuestiona los tópicos cristalizados del desierto a partir de un programa negativo que exacerba los efectos de ilegibilidad y detención. Se indagarán aquí las primeras formulaciones que adquirió esta representación en El viajero (La mayor, 1976) así como las articulaciones y desfases entre su modo de formalizar el paisaje y las diversas ocurrencias −literarias y visuales− de la imaginación territorial argentina. Por un lado se analizará cómo el argumento saeriano – y su borrador A los viajeros ingleses − retoma la tradición del viaje inglés – Francis Bon Head y Thomas Hutchinson − así como cuentos de Jorge Luis Borges, y se observará el lugar que ocupa el saladero en el espacio potencial que abren estas reescrituras. Por el otro, se considerará la singular experimentación sobre la prosa agujereada del relato, y su contigüidad material con una imagen relativamente inédita de la llanura.
In much of his work, Juan José Saer questions the crystallized topics of the desert based on a negative program that exacerbates the effects of illegibility and detention. We will investigate here the first formula- tions that this representation acquired in “The Traveler” (La mayor, 1976), as well as the articulations between its way of formalizing the landscape and the various occur- rences of the Argentine territorial imagination. On the one hand, we will analise how this text – and its draft “To English Travelers” – takes up the tradition of the English journey – Francis Bon Head and Thomas Hutchinson – as well as the stories by Jorge Luis Borges; and the place occupied by the saladero in the potential space that these rewritings open up. On the other hand, we will considere the experimentation on the “holey” prose of the text, and its material contiguity with a relatively untold image of the plain.
