Il racconto di Jorge Luis Borges Il Vangelo secondo Marco narra il modo crudele e barbaro in cui un giovane studente, Baltasar Espinosa, viene crocifisso da una famiglia di contadini analfabeti, dopo aver letto e riletto per loro la storia di Gesù secondo il Vangelo di Marco. Istruiti da questa lettura, i contadini vedono nel giovane un benefattore, salvatore e redentore che devono sacrificare come un nuovo Cristo. Il testo è stato generalmente interpretato dalla critica come una manifestazione dello spirito anticlericale e persino antireligioso di Borges, poiché dimostrerebbe i terribili effetti di un tipo di fede ignorante e letteralista incapace di scoprire il significato spirituale degli eventi reali. Da parte nostra, capiamo che il senso della storia è un altro, radicalmente opposto. Si tratta di postulare un tipo di fede testuale, che riconosca nel testo un principio generatore di realtà e di fatto in cui fidarsi, e che riconosca nel discorso narrativo una struttura bio-onto-esistenziale considerata un luogo di riconoscimento dell´umano e del sé.
Jorge Luis Borges’ story The Gospel According to Mark deals with the cruel and barbaric way in which a young student, Baltasar Espinosa, is crucified by a family of illiterate peasants, whom he has instructed in the story of Jesus narrated by Mark. Instructed by this reading, the peasants see the young man as a benefactor, savior and redeemer whom they must sacrifice as a new Christ. The text has generally been interpreted by critics as a manifestation of Borges’s anticlerical and even antireligious spirit, since it would demonstrate the terrible effects of a type of uneducated and literalist faith incapable of discovering the spiritual meaning of real events. For our part, we understand that the meaning of the story is another, radically opposite. It is a matter of postulating a type of textual faith, which recognizes in the text a principle that generates reality and facticity on which to trust, and which recognizes in the narrative discourse a bio-onto-existential structure considered a place of recognition of the human and of the self.
