Emmanuel Levinas frente al ascenso elemental del nazismo: un debate metodológico-político

En Algunas reflexiones sobre la filosofía del hitlerismo (1934) y frente al ascenso del nazismo en Europa, Levinas convoca a la civilización europea, en particular a las tradiciones judía, cristiana, liberal y marxista, a enfrentarse con el surgimiento de la filosofía elemental del hitlerismo. En este breve artículo, el filósofo exhorta a dichas tradiciones a remontarse a sus fuentes, intuición y decisión originarias, en especial, al "espíritu de libertad" que las anima y a su concepción del destino humano (Levinas, 1934: 8). Sin embargo, las reflexiones levinasianas dieron lugar a un debate metodológico-político sobre cómo interpretar esta apelación a un "espíritu" o "sentimiento" compartido por las tradiciones europeas de Occidente, así como sobre el significado que adquiere la contraparte elemental y amenazante del hitlerismo. El presente artículo tiene como objetivo indagar algunos aspectos de este debate metodológico-político suscitado por los escritos de Levinas de entreguerras.
In Reflections on the Philosophy of Hitlerism (1934) and in the face of the rise of Nazism in Europe, Levinas calls the European civilization, in particular, the Jewish, Christian, Liberal and Marxist traditions, to confront the emergence of the elementary philosophy of Hitlerism. In this short article, the philosopher urges those traditions to trace their identities back to their sources, intuitions and original decisions, in particular, to the "spirit of freedom" that animates them and to their conceptions of human destiny (Levinas, 1990: 64). However, in contemporary reception on Levinas' reflections there's a methodological and political discussion about how to interpret this appeal to a common "spirit" or "feeling" shared by European traditions, as well as about the meaning that acquires the elementary and threatening counterpart that is Hitlerism. This paper aims to inquire into some aspects of this methodological and political debate aroused by interwar writings of Levinas.
