- The role of geoarchaeological studies in analyzing formation processes, chronology and paleoenvironmental conditions is considered in archaeological sites ofsouthern Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. On the basis of sensitivity to the appropriatescale, an archaeological perspective is offered. Sedimentary, pedological andgeomorphic context are treated as important variables since they are related withdifferent aspects of archaeological interpretation. If the archaeological record is spatiallycontinuous, and its location in stratigraphy or on the surface is highly variable, particularly in relation with geomorphic variables, both situations need to be tackled foran integral approach. As an integrative aspect among the studied localities, the fieldwork have revealedthe recurrent presence of a pedological event in the upper section of eolian and colluvialdeposits of the late Holocene. Its temporal relationship with the medieval climaticanomalies called Medieval Warm Period or Medieval Optimum in Europe is suggestive. The distribution of artifacts in the soil profile shows a low frequency in its upper part, that is to say that, in spite of representing a stabilized surface during several centuries, ithas not been a recipient of abundant archaeological material. That seems to suggest agreater human presence in these places at some time prior to the pedologicaldevelopment, during the predominance of the aridity conditions at regional scale. It canbe speculated that changes occurring since those moments have affected the distributionand/or concentration of resources in the region, but it must be considered that the naturalformation processes were also been affected, changing the resolution of the furtherrecord.
