Desde principios del siglo XX, existe una controversia importante respecto del estatus taxonómico de las langostillas Munida gregaria y M. subrugosa. En este trabajo se intentó definir el estatus taxonómico de M. gregaria y M. subrugosa del extremo sur de Sudamérica abordando el problema de un modo multidisciplinario, poniendo a prueba hipótesis genéticas, reproductivas y ecológicas. Se utilizaron técnicas de la genética molecular para determinar si M. gregaria y M. subrugosa constituyen clados monofiléticos recíprocos, se llevaron a cabo experimentos de cruzamiento para investigar la existencia de algún tipo de aislamiento reproductivo entre las mismas, y se estudió la dieta natural de ambas morfoespecies para saber si poseen hábitos alimentarios diferentes. Los resultados obtenidos en este trabajo no aportaron evidencias a favor de la hipótesis que Munida gregaria y M. subrugosa del sur de Sudamérica son dos especies distintas. Permanece aún sin resolverse la posible existencia de infertilidad híbrida, o la reducción de la viabilidad de los híbridos por algún otro factor extrínseco. Se discuten los resultados como un posible caso de polimorfismo mantenido por selcción natural, plasticidad fenotípica o contacto secundario entre poblaciones que han divergido en alopatría sin completar el aislamiento reproductivo.
An important controversy exists with regard to the taxonomic status of the squat lobsters Munida gregaria and M. subrugosa since the beginning of the XXth century. In the present study, the taxonomic problem between M. gregaria and M. subrugosa was approached in a multidisciplinary way, testing genetic, reproductive and ecologic hypotheses. Molecular genetic techniques were used to determine if M. gregaria and M. subrugosa constitute two reciprocal monophyletic clades, crossbreeding experiments were carried out to investigate the existence of some kind of reproductive isolation between them, and the natural diet of both morphospecies was studied in order to find out if they have different feeding habits. The results obtained in this study provided no evidence to support the hypothesis that M. gregaria and M. subrugosa from southern South America are two different species. Issues as the potential infertility of hybrids, as well as the potential existence of other extrinsic factors affecting hybrid viability, still remain unsolved. Results are discussed as a possible case of a polymorphism maintained by natural selection, phenotypic plasticity or a secondary contact between previously isolated allopatric populations.
