The impacts of free trade agreements on economies: the case of Mercosur

El objetivo de este estudio es averiguar cómo afectan los acuerdos de libre comercio a las economías. Para ello, se analizará el caso del acuerdo comercial sudamericano MERCOSUR y se dará respuesta a las siguientes preguntas. ¿Está aumentando el volumen comercial después de la introducción de un acuerdo de libre comercio? ¿Cómo se desarrollan otras variables económicas y cuánto de estos desarrollos pueden explicarse por el volumen de comercio? ¿Qué variables afectan el PIB de una economía? ¿es el volumen de comercio un factor de influencia? Los datos económicos de los miembros del MERCOSUR se recogerán, evaluarán y visualizarán gráficamente. Además, se estimará la relación entre estos fundamentos y el volumen de negociación y se desarrollará un modelo para explicar el PBI. Las conclusiones de la investigación son que las exportaciones y las importaciones y, por lo tanto, el volumen total de comercio han aumentado en todos los países miembros del MERCOSUR. El PIB y el PIB per cápita crecieron, mientras que el desempleo y la inflación disminuyeron. El desarrollo del consumo y la productividad es ambiguo. El volumen comercial total en el caso del MERCOSUR parece tener una influencia significativa en el PBI y el PBI per cápita, mientras que el efecto en las otras variables es menos significativo. A partir de las variables examinadas, las variables importaciones, exportaciones y desempleo son las que influyen significativamente en el crecimiento del PIB y, por lo tanto, están incluidas en el modelo desarrollado. Si bien las importaciones y el desempleo tienen una influencia negativa, las exportaciones están afectando positivamente al PIB.
The objective of this study is to find out, how free trade agreements impact economies. For the research, the case of the South American trade agreement MERCOSUR will be analyzed and answers to the following questions will be found. Is the trade volume increasing after introduction of a free trade agreement? How do other economic variables develop and how much of these de- velopments can be explained by the trading volume? What variables do affect the GDP of an economy and is the trade volume an influencing factor? Economic data of the members of the MERCOSUR will be collected, evaluated and visualized graphically. Additionally the relationship between these fundamentals and the trading volume will be estimated. Furthermore a model to explain the GDP will be developed. The primary findings of the research are that exports as well as imports and thus the total trading volume have increased in all the MERCOSUR member countries. Furthermore GDP and GDP per Capita grew, while unemployment and inflation decreased. The development of consumption and productivity is ambiguous. The total trade volume in case of MERCOSUR seems to have a significant influence on GDP and GDP per Capita, while the effect on the other variables is less significant. From the examined variables, the variables imports, exports and unemployment are the ones that significantly influence the growth of GDP and thus are included in the developed model. While imports and unemployment have a negative influence, exports are affecting the GDP positively.
