Descripción
Fossil reptiles from the Tacuarembó Formation (Late Jurassic of Uruguay) include a diverse array of basal testudines, crocodyliforms, pterosaurs and particularly dinosaurs, mostly recovered in this century. Some components of the herpetofauna are not useful for precising the age of the unit due to the endemic character of both Tacuarembemys (plus its uncertain phylogenetic placement) and Meridiosaurus, and the large biochrons of Abelisauridae (Middle/Late Jurassic-Late Cretaceous) and Diplodocidae (Late Jurassic-early Late Cretaceous), although others are: megalosaurids and piatnitzkysaurids are recorded from Middle to Late Jurassic times, Ceratosaurus is restricted to the Late Jurassic and spatulated gnathosaurine pterosaurs to the Tithonian-Berrasian. Overall, the herpetofauna strongly suggests a Late Jurassic age for the unit, probably Tithonian.
