Descripción
During de First International Polar Year a French expedition installed a geomagnetic Observatory at Orange Bay (55º 31' geogr. lat., 70º 85' W long.), near Cape Hoorn. The records comprised the 11 months from October 1882 through August 1883. In order to complete a full annual period for an analysis of the quiet solar diurnal variaition (Sq) the mean Sq of the missing month was interpolated algebraically after reduction for secular variation. From this yearly record the mean seasonal variation (winter, summer, equinoxes) of the Components X, Y, Z were obtained. The Z component of Sq shows a fore-noon minimum a feature already found at New Year's Island (54º 39' geogr. lat., 64º 09' W long.), in contrast to the maximum typically occurring during these hours. The present results drawn from observations made a century ago are intended to fill a gap in the North-South chain of Sq in Argentine territory.
