Olivetti pertenece al selecto grupo de empresas que no necesitan presentación. Todo el mundo las conoce. Sin embargo, cuando abordamos la historia de Olivetti en la Argentina varios de sus principales relatos se fragmentan, se tornan difusos o, directamente, resultan desconocidos para el gran público. En las décadas del ‘50 y ‘60, en una Argentina pujante y con ansias de desarrollo, las entrañables máquinas de escribir de Olivetti eran una de las imágenes arquetípicas de la ofimática. Sin embargo, en comparación, es mucho menos conocido que la corporación italiana también tuvo importantes desarrollos en informática que le permitieron competir, en productos y servicios, con corporaciones tecnológicas como las norteamericanas IBM y Burroughs Corporation o la francesa Bull. En la ponencia se analiza la historia de este gigante tecnológico en el país, alumbrando sus dimensiones menos conocidas, su plan de modernidad social y cultural y su modelo de desarrollo e innovación en informática. La ponencia forma parte de una investigación mayor que analiza las historias de la informática en Argentina y América Latina y la relevancia que han tenido algunas corporaciones tecnológicas extranjeras durante el siglo XX y XXI.
Olivetti belongs to the select group of companies that do not need presentation. Everyone knows them. However, when we approach the history of Olivetti in Argentina, several of its main stories are fragmented, they become diffuse or, directly, they are unknown to the general public. In the decades of ‘50 and ‘60, in a thriving Argentina and eager for development, the endearing typewriters of Olivetti were one of the archetypal images of the office. However, in comparison, it is much less known that the Italian corporation also had important computer developments that allowed it to compete, in products and services, with technological corporations such as the North American IBM and Burroughs Corporation or the French Bull. The presentation analyzes the history of this technological giant in the country, illuminating its less known dimensions, its plan of social and cultural modernity and its model of development and innovation in computer science. The presentation is part of a greater investigation that analyzes the stories of computer science in Argentina and Latin America and the relevance that some foreign technological corporations have had during the twentieth and twenty -first century.
