Resumen: La muerte es un fenómeno natural que tarde o temprano formará parte de nuestras biografías. Morir en paz debería ser no sólo factible sino normal; pero es problemático en una cultura cuyos valores son la persistencia de la juventud, el poder o el éxito. Daniel Callahan señala que los objetivos de la Medicina del siglo XXI tienen que ser dos: por una parte, prevenir y tratar de vencer las enfermedades, por otra, cuando independientemente de todos nuestros esfuerzos llegue la muerte, conseguir que los pacientes mueran en paz, ya que a pesar de los avances tecnológicos, nunca podremos posponerla indefinidamente. Se realizará una reflexión acerca del dolor y el sufrimiento al final de la vida y sobre las posibles intervenciones psicológicas que contribuyan al logro del objetivo mencionado.
Abstract: Death is a natural phenomenon that we will face earlier or later. Not only should dying at peace be possible, but normal; but it is difficult in a culture whose values are endless youth, power or success. Daniel Callahan points out that the aims of 21st Century Medicine must be two: on the one hand, the prevention and defeat of disease, on the other hand, when death is imminent despite all our efforts, try to help patients to die at peace since, regardless of the technological advances, we cannot postpone death indefinitely. This article includes a reflection on the pain and suffering at the end of life and the possible psychological interventions that may contribute to attain the above referred purpose.
