Essential oils from Lippia turbinata and Tagetes minuta alter ruminal fatty acids metabolism in a continuous-culture system

- Consumers demand animal products that are safe, healthy and environmental friendly. Essential oils (EO) and other plant compounds with antimicrobial effects are in study to manipulate rumen fermentation. In batch studies, EO from two native species (Lippia turbinata, Lt and Tagetes minuta, Tm) reduced rumen methane production (Martínez Ferrer et al., 2014). Hydrogen can increase under methane inhibition; thus, EO can potentially alter ruminal bio-hydrogenation (BH) of fatty acids (FA). In continuous-culture we confirmed >80% reduction on methane production of these two EO for 12 days (Garcia et al., 2018). Here we complement that work with the aim to study the effects of Lt and Tm EO on in vitro ruminal metabolism of FA in continuous-culture fermenters.
