Una edad global: Juventud y modernización en el siglo XX

El objetivo de este ensayo es indicar algunas de las posibilidades y límites que ofrece la historiografía en clave transnacional para la construcción de una historia de la juventud—y viceversa. La juventud constituye una “unidad de análisis y experiencia” y tres aspectos se prestan, en particular, a un tipo de abordaje transnacional: la construcción de la juventud (y de la adolescencia) como categoría de análisis presumidamente científica; la diseminación de ciertos bienes que han servido de marcadores de edad; y las (auto) percepciones de los/as jóvenes en contextos de revueltas globales, como el momento ’68. Este ensayo se detiene en cada una de esas tres dimensiones, aunque en su primera sección ofrece un repaso por la historiografía de la juventud que ha puesto el acento en las relaciones entre juventud y modernización, relaciones que pueden ser revisitadas desde un abordaje transnacional y también desde una creciente desconfianza hacia el concepto mismo de “modernización”.
This article discusses the potentials and limits that the so-called transnational historiography offers to the building a history of youth, and vice versa. In terms of the transnational historiography, I understand youth as a “unit of analysis and experience”. Three aspects of that “unit”, in particular, call for the uses of transnational perspectives: the making of adolescence and youth as categories of “scientific” analysis; the dissemination of certain goods that served as markers of that age; and the (self) perceptions of young people in contexts of global revolts, such as the “68’ moment”. The article briefly discusses each of these three dimensions, and its first section also offers a review of the historiography of youth that has emphasized the relations between youth and modernization, relations that may be revisited from a transnational approach and from a rising distrust towards the concept of modernization per se.
